A Little Tid Bit About the History of Drills

I have been working with electric drills for so long it's hard to believe that the drill at one time was not even a thought in a carpenter or woodworkers head. In fact, the electric drill wasn't even invented until 1899 by two men named Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain in Melbourne Australia. The portable electric drill was invented in 1895 by Willhellm Fein in 1895, at Stuttgart, Germany.

The first electric drill wasn't as fancy as the drills we have today. It was just used for the basics, to make a hole in something hard. The first drills, even before the electric drill date all the way back to the Egyptians. These bow drills turned into a drill press machine which was powered by water wheels and windmills and were connected to a pulley system to make them operational.

There are a whole bunch of different drills to be used for different jobs. Some drills are powered by hand and others, the newer ones are powered by electricity, air, and even internal combustion. Some drills are very large and are used primarily for hammering purposes. The hammer drill and jackhammer are normally used to break up rock. The biggest drills are the ones you can see in Texas to drill oil an are used to make large and deep holes in the earth. These drills are called drill rigs.

The smallest of drills are the oldest as well. Some of these drills have been used over the last few centuries. A few examples would be the bow drill, gimlet, eggbeater drill and pin chuck.

The most common drills and the ones that are abundant and most used today are the pistol-grip drill. These drills are shaped like a pistol with the trigger being the way the drill is powered on. You simply pull the trigger and the drill goes. Let go and it stops. These drills are so abundant today because you can purchase a plethora of different drill bits that can be used for a multitude of job descriptions.

You can buy drill bits to drill holes, fasten and unfasten screws and bolts, sanding, and sawing. So now instead of buying a new drill for each job, you would just simply purchase a new drill bit to use on the old drill.

Drills have beed used over a long period of time and will continue to be used to make our jobs much easier.
